The department of surgery covers the whole spectrum of general and visceral surgery, operating on around 2,500 patients each year. The clinic specialises in the treatment of malignant diseases of the abdomen (especially of the whole gastrointestinal tract), pancreatic, and biliary diseases. There is a special expertise in the treatment of diverticulitis and inflammatory bowel diseases, laparoscopic surgical procedures (keyhole surgery) and endocrine surgery. In close cooperation with the highly specialised clinic for anesthesia and intensive care medicine the surgeons perform extensive operations like simultaneous abdominal and thoracic operations (eg for esophageal cancer) with a high standard of patient care. Very close cooperation with the clinic of internal medicine (gastroenterology) and the clinic of Gynaecology ensures best possible results.
